Training Program

The new reserve recruit at JCFD can expect to spend many hours becoming a firefighter.  After a twelve hour orientation, recruits are issued turn-out gear and then attend eighty hours of Basic/Live Firefighting, conducted through the Tennessee Fire and Codes Academy in Bellbuckle, TN.  Once completed, firefighters are then moved to probationary status, and within the first year of their service receive training and certification in Emergency Medical First Responder, Vehicle Rescue, ICS (Incident Command System), and Hazmat Operations.  After a year's service, Probationary Firefighters are eligible to take the State of Tennessee Firefighter 1 certification exam.  Upon passing the exam, they are given the title of Firefighter and receive their badges.  After two successive years in the service, Firefighters can challenge the State of Tennessee Firefighter 2 exam.  Other specialized training is also available, including RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) Ops, Hazmat, Driver/Operator, Wildland Firefighting, and more.  Reserves drill twice a month on various topics, including sessions held in the classroom, and on the drill field.  Classes hosted by TFACA instructors are available at several other participating departments in the area.   As well, firefighters from other departments sometimes drill and train with JCFD firefighters.  Many other State certifications are available to qualified applicants, including Fire Officer 1 and 2, Pumper Driver/Operator, Aerial Driver/Operator, Fire Instructor 1 and 2, Fire Safety/Prevention, Wildland Firefighting, and many more.   You can see a complete list of available certifications by clicking here.  A current schedule of JCFD training sessions can be viewed by clicking here.
